The Statistics Department came into existence in 1968 as a part of Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The unit really became functional as an independent Department in 1970 with  three regular teachers of Statistics under the esteemed leadership of distinguished Statistician, researcher and author Professor Dr. M.G. Mustafa. The Department celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its establishment in 1994 in  a pomp and grandeur manner.

The Department of Statistics is one of the oldest and leading Department in Bangladesh and is committed to advancing knowledge and learning through teaching and research in Statistics.

The Department of Statistics at Chittagong University has an excellent infrastructure and facilities for the teaching and research activities at B.Sc. (Honours), M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D. levels. The key objectives of the Department are to serve as a centre of excellence for statistical research and education, provide a vibrant and creative learning environment to students willing to make a career in the field of core and interdisciplinary statistics, and connect with other sister departments and neighbouring institutions/organizations to address social needs.

The course curriculum is designed to develop a class of analytic and inferential aptitude among the students through rigorous practical and lab assignments along with exposure to  field study. The Department  also teaches courses useful to those required  to apply statistics in many fields including medicine, social science, biology and business management and develop statistical computing skills for use in quantitative and qualitative data-based problem solving.

The computer laboratory of the Department is well-equipped with nearly 80 computers having state of the art computer facilities. The students are trained on various statistical languages and packages like Fortran, SPSS, SHAZAM, STATA,SAS, MINITAB, R, S-PLUS, MATLAB and MATHEMATICA.

The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, essential for development, nurturing of team spirit and developing organizational skills.
